Muhu, well known for its biodiversity

Muhu Island is well known for its biodiversity, the fact that Muhu was off-limits during Soviet time and the lack of intensive agricultural activity has contributed to this unique situation. A large part of the Island is now protected under Natura 2000, the EU program for protected coastal areas.

The landscape consists of fields, forests, wetlands, cliffs and small bogs. A variety of grasses, ferns, berries, brushes, orchids, pine, birch and our ‘national’ tree the juniper paint the landscape. Muhu is home to foxes, deer and moose to name a few. Birdlife is of particular interest since the coastal areas are a favorite stopover location for migratory birds as geese, ducks and swans. Three couples of the rare and majestic sea eagle nest on Muhu Island, the nightingale takes center stage in the evenings of mid June.
