The inhabitants of Muhu, have a character of their own. As Islanders they are proud, sometimes a bit stubborn and very much attached to nature, traditions and seasonal cycle. Harmony, communal support and a fluid sense of humor are traits they are well known for.
Muhu Island has a population of about 2000, which in summertime more then doubles when many Estonians return to their cottages or ancestors’ farms. Agriculture and fishing have for centuries been the main sources of income for those who lived on the Island. Muhu was also known for it’s wandering craftsmen who would work on the mainland, for example in the construction industry. It was these craftsmen who gave Estonia it’s only true architectural style. The Muhu Architectural Style can be found all over Estonia, the annexes of Pädaste manor are a good example. Today tourism has become an important activity for the community while small scale and extensive farming has started on its path of revival.
