Wunderkammer: A Living Cabinet of Wonders Near Kuivastu Tavern
On the eastern edge of Muhu Island, near the historic Kuivastu tavern, there’s a place where history, art, and personal stories come together. This is no ordinary building, but a living cabinet of wonders—Wunderkammer—created by artist Urmas Viik, inviting visitors to explore and reflect.
Wunderkammer is not just a collection of curious objects, but a space where every detail tells a story. It’s located in the former vegetable cellar of Kuivastu Manor, which Viik has carefully restored, preserving its vaulted ceilings and historic charm. A place once used to store winter crops is now filled with art that reflects both the spirit of Muhu and Viik’s personal narrative.
Urmas Viik’s connection to Muhu is deep and multifaceted. As a child, he spent summers here with his aunt Leeni, and now he and his wife Mari have dedicated themselves to breathing new life into the outbuildings of Kuivastu Manor. Their work has revitalized once-forgotten spaces, turning them into a vibrant part of the community once again.
In addition to Wunderkammer, Viik has made his mark on Muhu’s 35th municipal anniversary by designing its official logo—an embroidered strawberry. Inspired by traditional Muhu embroidery, this sweet emblem captures the richness of life and the unity of the community.
Wunderkammer is a place where history and creativity intertwine, where every corner speaks of time, memory, and place. It stands as a powerful reminder of how personal dedication and love for one’s home can breathe new life into even the most forgotten corners.
If you're seeking something truly unique—where art, heritage, and heartfelt stories come together—then make your way toward Kuivastu Tavern and let Wunderkammer surprise you.
